Acumen Fund India | Health Portfolio Summer Associate

Acumen Fund is a global non-profit venture fund and it exists to help end poverty by changing how the world addresses it. We do this in two ways. We invest patient capital to identify, strengthen and scale business models that effectively serve the poor. And we champion and spread this approach as an effective complement to traditional aid, which can create dependence, or pure market approaches, which can bypass the actual needs of the poor. Founded in 2001, Acumen Fund has invested almost $50 million in enterprises that serve the poor in East Africa, India and Pakistan; with $24 million of that directly in water, clean energy, agriculture and healthcare enterprises in India.

Position Description :
Acumen Fund India is looking for a Summer Associate to work directly with the Health Portfolio team in Mumbai. Associates will help analyze new market opportunities within our portfolios area, develop tools for benchmarking new pipeline, and perform due diligence, document market research and enable knowledge sharing.

This associate will be required to use his or her professional business skills in researching and analyzing enterprises and will gain practical insights into a new approach to social investing – patient capital. The associates will focus primarily in the following areas:

Perform landscape analysis on healthcare infrastructure with the goal of 1) understanding the current landscape, 2) finding new pipeline opportunities, and 3) informing our health investment thesis
Perform state-by-state government and policy landscape analysis
Perform sector research on different rural and BoP healthcare areas
Identify and understand all key players in the sectors
Correlate opportunities with key health indicators
Synthesize findings
Contribute to management support efforts and analysis of Acumen Fund portfolio companies in the health sector. Example projects may include:
Assisting companies in budgeting exercise, including setting targets, tracking against targets, reporting, etc.
Building strategy and execution plan for rural outreach programs
Providing guidance on how to build out company websites as customer interface for BoP health solutions
Contribute to due diligence on new investment opportunities in the health space. Activities may include:
Meeting with management and promoters of prospective companies to review business plan assumptions.
Researching market and competition for prospective portfolio companies.
Building detailed financial model and investment memorandum for prospective company.


Position Requirements :

Candidate for MBA or similar graduate-level degree
Experience in financial analysis and modeling, particularly in venture capital or private equity
Management consulting experience
Experience conducting due diligence on commercial transactions
Commitment to Acumen Fund’s mission
Academic training or work experience focused on health, water, housing, or energy
Ability to take initiative with research and analysis
India or international work experience; capacity to work with a team across different countries /cultures
Capability to present investment ideas in memoranda to senior management and advisors
Excellent written and communication skills to assist in communication activities

Position Type : Internship

Duration : 11 weeks
Acumen Fund India will not accept applications for less than an 11 week period.

It should be noted that :

All travel and accommodation costs will need to be borne by applicants.
Acumen Fund India will not be able to assist applicants in procuring their employment visas. As such, applicants should be authorized to work in India.
Acumen Fund India will cover costs for domestic work related travel.

Compensation :
Rs.20,000/month. (Students: Find out if you are eligible for a supplemental grant from your school’s internship fund)
